About this Event

Ahead of its publication in May 2020, Adam Begley’s biography of the enigmatic Houdini is attracting a lot of attention: “Witty, intelligent, and sprightly, Adam Begley’s Houdini tells a story that is not only central to the American experience, but strangely pertinent to the fakery, fraudulence, and self-promotion dominating our news waves at present.” Wendy Lesser, author of Jerome Robbins: A Life in Dance

Circle Sq. are delighted to host a literary “Evening with… Adam Begley”, former books editor of The New York Observer. He is the author of biographies of John Updike and French portrait photographer, Nadar; and is a master of the art of writing a biography. Scrupulous research, delving into every bit of the subject’s past – the good, the bad and best bits! But what to do with all the material once it’s been collected? Writing in the Guardian, Begley says, “If there has to be a first rule of biography, perhaps it should be that dirt for dirt’s sake is offensive – vulgar, a slur. But dirt for art’s sake, dirt put to exegetical purpose, is precious – far more precious than good taste”.

Join us to hear Adam in conversation, talking about his new book about Houdini, the escape artist who was born in Budapest in 1874, and who never really told anyone how he did it. Adam will also share with us the perils of writing biographies, families that discover that they don’t really want their dirty linen washed in public, and ultimately the joy of telling someone’s story.
