Event description

Description

We're ridiculously excited to announce an evening with two authors who have released what we think are two of the best books published this year. Anna Hope and Lara Williams will be here on Wednesday 20th November talking to Naomi Booth (Sealed) about their recent novels Expectation and Supper Club, both of which take a contemporary look at feminisim and female friendships.

About the books:

Expectation

Hannah, Cate and Lissa are young, vibrant and inseparable. Living on the edge of a common in East London, their shared world is ablaze with art and activism, romance and revelry – and the promise of everything to come. They are electric. They are the best of friends.

Ten years on, they are not where they hoped to be. Amidst flailing careers and faltering marriages, each hungers for what the others have. And each wrestles with the same question: what does it take to lead a meaningful life?

Anna Hope studied at Oxford University and RADA. She is the internationally prizewinning and bestselling author of Wake and The Ballroom. Her contemporary fiction debut, Expectation, explores themes of love, lust, motherhood, and feminism, while asking the greater question of what defines a generation. She lives in Sussex with her husband and young daughter.

Supper Club

Twenty-nine year old Roberta has spent her whole life hungry - until the day she invents Supper Club.

Supper Club is a secret society for hungry women. Women who are sick of bad men and bad sex, of hinted expectations to talk less, take less, be less. So they gather after dark and feast until they are sick. They drink and dance and roar. And, month by month, their bodies expand.

At the centre of the Supper Club stands Roberta - cynical yet anxious, precocious and lost. She is seeking the answer to a simple question: if you feed a starving woman, what will she grow into?

This is a story about the hunger that never goes away. And it is a story about the people who make us what we are - who lead us astray and ultimately save us.

Lara Williams is the author of the short story collection Treats which was shortlisted for the Republic of Consciousness Prize, the Edinburgh First Book Award and the Saboteur Awards and longlisted for the Edge Hill Short Story Prize. She has contributed to the Guardian, Independent, Times Literary Supplement, Vice, Dazed and others. Lara Williams lives in Manchester where she teaches creative writing at Manchester Metropolitan University. Supper Club is her first novel.

---

Naomi Booth is the authour of Sealed - a gripping modern fable on motherhood. She was born and raised in West Yorkshire and is now based in York, where she lectures in Creative Writing and Literature at York St John University. Her novella, The Lost Art of Sinking, won the Saboteur Award for Best Novella 2016.

Tickets for this event are £3.00 and include a complimentary glass of wine plus money off both books on the night.
