About this event

In a world of rapid and not always immediately apparent change, we are honoured to welcome former political advisor and author of The Wizard of the Kremlin Giuliano da Empoli here to Hatchards Piccadilly this evening to discuss his new non-fiction book

The Hour of the Predator:

Encounters with the Autocrats and Tech Billionaires Taking Over the World

in which he asks how we might defend democracy when the rules have shifted; when presidents turning into monarchs, tech tycoons and autocrats are intent on global regime change and armies of cyber trolls haunt our digital lives? In essence, when the old order is at an end; and the hour of the predator has come.

As Anne Applebaum, author of Autocracy Inc. has said, this is “The one book you absolutely need to read in order to understand current politics”.

This evening, Giuliano will take us on an insider's journey through this new reality, from the Glass Palace of the UN to the Riyadh Ritz-Carlton, from top secret meetings to violent power struggles. We will encounter dictators and tyrants, strongmen and AI billionaires - geopolitical predators, and the flailing leaders who desperately try to appease them.

We hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be a slightly terrifying but certainly revelatory discussion of the world in which we are living today and ways of understanding – and perhaps counter-acting – it.
