Event description

Description

Waterstones Cambridge and the Joyce Frankland Society (Caius College, Cambridge University) are honoured to be hosting author, educator and campaigner Hibo Wardere.

Hibo's memoir, Cut: One Woman's Fight Against FGM in Britain Today, is an eloquent and searingly honest story which sheds light on a medieval practice that's being carried out in the 21st century, right on our doorstep. FGM in the UK has gone undocumented for too long and now that's going to change. Devastating, empowering and informative, this book brings to life a clash of cultures at the heart of contemporary society and shows how female genital mutilation is a very British problem.

Hibo Wardere was born and raised in Somalia. At age 6 she was the victim of Type 3 FGM. She moved to London as a teenager where she became a mother, teacher, mediator, public speaker, and anti-FGM campaigner. Hibo delivers training to teachers, politicians, police officers, social workers, midwives, and doctors on FGM.

The Joyce Frankland Society is the Gonville & Caius College gender & feminism society. They aim to create an inclusive & diverse space to discuss intersectional feminism & gender issues within the college, Cambridge & beyond. They run weekly events such as student-led discussions, film screenings, external speaker events, panel discussions, as well as arts & crafts evenings. They run a blog on which they publish articles covering any aspect of intersectional feminism, written by people in and outside of the university. They also edit, create & publish a biannual magazine called 'Frankly Speaking', in which they platform work covering all aspects of feminism & gender politics. All proceeds from the sale of 'Frankly Speaking' go to their biannually chosen charities.
