Julian Huppert is the Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge. He was named Internet Hero 2013 at last summer's Internet Service Providers Association Awards. He won this Award, voted by the ISPA Council, by a country mile.
This is because Julian is one of the few technology and internet literate MPs in the House of Commons. Julian was one of the few voices of sanity that spoke out against the Digital Economy Act and was instrumental in killing off the Draft Data Communications Bill, otherwise known as the Snoopers' Charter.
This evening has been organised to help raise funds towards campaign costs to get Julian relelected at the next General Election. This is not a party political event. It is in the interest of the internet industry to have Julian in the house of Commons fighting our corner - just speaking common sense really.
The format is a private dinner to be held in the Lady Violet Room at the National Liberal Club in Whitehall. Julian is the guest of honour and will give us a speech outlining the issues he perceives that we as an industry have to get across to MPs. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and to personally engage.
If you've never been the NLC is a seriously classy venue. A truly old fashioned Club with a serious emphasis on quality. We are inviting leaders from the internet community in the UK to this dinner. It is therefore also a networking opportunity without equal and one that will be talked about afterwards.
The price tag is not cheap but we need to remember that the objective is to raise funds. We won't however be stinting on the food and drink and it will be a highly entertaining evening. The proposed menu is below (subject to seasonal changes, market availability etc) but it gives you an idea. Let me know if you have any specific dietary requirements.
Smoked Salmon, Lobster and Crab Paupiette with a Basil Purée
Loin of Highland Venison with Roast Pears and a Bitter Chocolate Sauce
Seasonal Vegetables and Potatoes
White Chocolate and Griottine Cherry Tart
Plate of Cheeses with Celery and Grapes
Coffee and Mints
It's a 7pm meet with sit down at 8pm. However if you get there anytime after 6.30 there will be someone there to meet you. Dress code is smart but I'd recommend wearing suit, tie and black shoes which is the dress code for elsewhere in the club - just in case we adjourn somewhere.
