Finchley Church End Library presents: An Evening with Kate Thompson & Melanie McGrath talking about all things East End of London, Stepney, Silvertown, Roman Road, Pie & Mash & Hop Picking on Monday 13th May 2019

Kate Thompson is an award-winning journalist, ghost-writer and novelist. She worked as Deputy & Acting Editor of IPC’s weekly Pick Me Up magazine. In addition, she also has five years’ experience working on national newspapers, the Daily Express and Daily Mail.

Over the past seven years, she had concentrated on publishing, writing ten fiction and non-fiction titles. Her debut novel, Secrets of the Singer Girls, became a Sunday Times bestseller when it launched in 2015.

Kate’s first non-fiction book which uncovers the lives of extraordinary women of wartime East End, The Stepney Doorstep Society was published by Penguin in August 2018 and reached number one in the history categories on Amazon. She is currently working on two further wartime novels for Hodder & Stoughton, the first of which, Secrets of the Homefront Girls, will be published in August 2019.

Melanie McGrath is an Essex girl, journalist and former TV producer/presenter and the author of critically acclaimed, bestselling non-fiction Silvertown, Hopping. Pie and Mash Down the Roman Road, tells the story of the Roman Road through one East End pie and mash shop and the lives and loves of the people who have worked and eaten there. The book is shortlisted for the 2018 Historical Writers’ Association Crown for nonfiction.

Melanie won the John Llewelyn-Rhys/Mail on Sunday award for Best New British and Commonwealth Writer under 35 for her first book Motel Nirvana. As M.J. McGrath and Mel McGrath she writes crime fiction. fiction. Two novels in her Edie Kiglatuk series of Arctic thrillers were longlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association Gold Dagger for best crime novel of the year. The series is currently being developed for TV in the USA. Her psychological thriller Give Me The Child is a USA Today bestseller.

She writes for the national press and is a regular broadcaster on radio

The talk will cover Kate & Melanie books, and what inspires them to write such gripping stories followed by a ten-minute Q&A session, with a mystery prize for the best question.
