The UK's former Permanent Representative to the EU, National Security Adviser, and British Ambassador to the United States, will address our members and guests on the Isle of Man on 27th Novermber, at a black tie dinner sponsored by Standard Bank.
Lord Darroch will give us an insight into the current state of Western Democracy, in the aftermath of Brexit, the Trump presidency, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Drawing on his extensive experience navigating complex global affairs, Lord Darroch will provide valuable insights on the difficulties and uncertainties facing democracies today and the role of diplomacy in addressing these challenges.
Lord Darroch embarked on his diplomatic journey in 1977 and stands as a seasoned diplomat renowned for his expertise in national security and European policy, boasting an illustrious career spanning over four decades. Transitioning from a distinguished civil service tenure in the UK to a respected life peer in the esteemed House of Lords, Lord Darroch's trajectory is marked by a steadfast commitment to public service.
In his seminal work, "Collateral Damage: Britain, America and Europe in the Age of Trump" (2020), Lord Darroch offers invaluable insights into the complex dynamics between Britain and the United States. Drawing from his firsthand experiences as the British Ambassador to the United States from 2016 to 2019, he candidly navigates the challenges of working within the Trump administration and confronts the fallout of leaked confidential cables wherein he critiqued the administration, ultimately leading to his resignation.
Lord Darroch's influence extends far beyond his ambassadorial role, as evidenced by his pivotal contributions to global affairs. As the National Security Adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron from 2012 to 2015, he steered the UK through tumultuous times, overseeing critical issues in regions such as Iraq, Libya, and Ukraine.His illustrious career includes notable positions such as Permanent UK Representative to the European Union and EU Adviser to Prime Minister Tony Blair, underpinning his understanding of multilateral negotiations and international diplomacy.
Knighted as a Knight Commander (KCMG) in 2008 and recognised as a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) in 1997, Lord Darroch's contributions to diplomacy and public service are enduring testaments to his unwavering dedication.
