Event description

Description

Thousands will remember footage of poet, Tony Walsh, aka ‘Longfella’, reading his poem, This is the Place to those gathered in Albert Square in the aftermath of the terror attack in Manchester. Liam Gallagher said it was “the best thing I’ve ever heard come out of any Mancunian’s mouth, ever”, whilst Jeanette Winterson said, Walsh “found words where there are no words”.

We’re honoured that Tony has accepted a commission to write a new poem especially for Rochdale Literature & Ideas Festival which will be exclusively premiered at this, our finale event, when he will also perform selections from his unique poetry portfolio.

A former housing officer for Manchester City Council, Tony worked in community regeneration in Salford alongside his freelance writing and performance career, before becoming a full-time poet in 2011. He’s appeared widely around the UK and further afield, at festivals, including Glastonbury, and has led workshops in schools, colleges, universities and prisons. His first poetry collection, Sex & Love & Rock&Roll, was published in 2015.

Tony’s passionate performances of his unashamedly defiant and political work have resonated with millions across the world, and the festival is excited to be hosting a poet truly of our time.
