Event Details

Returning for its third year, the IEEE ED Scotland Evening Explorations see presentations by internationally renowned experts from the field of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The talks are followed by a drinks reception with a range of practical table-top displays for all to enjoy.  The event provides an opportunity to socialise with other guests from academia, industry and the wider Scottish community. This year's talk is entitled:

Adventures in Wireless Communications towards 5G

by Professor John Thompson

This talk will discuss some of the major research advances in wireless communications in the last twenty years, as we have moved from second generation voice systems to the current fourth generation wireless data communications. In this period we have seen a revolution in wireless devices and connectivity. In this talk we will discuss key concepts relating to intelligent antennas, data transmission and cooperative communications. More recently, researchers and industry have been looking for ways to improve the energy efficiency of future communications systems or green radio. Finally, we will take a look at the next generation of wireless communications and what might be coming up in fifth generation (5G) wireless communications.

The Evolution of Wireless

Biography: John Thompson is currently a Professor and Director of the Electronics and Electrical Engineering Discipline at the School of Engineering in the University of Edinburgh. He specializes in antenna array processing, cooperative communications systems and energy efficient wireless communications. He has published in excess of three hundred papers on these topics. He is currently coodinator for the EU Marie Curie Training Network ADVANTAGE, which studies how communications and power engineering can provide future smart grid systems.  He is also an editor for the Green Communications and Computing Series that appears regularly in IEEE Communications Magazine. In January 2016, he was elevated to Fellow membership of the IEEE for contributions to antenna arrays and multi-hop communications.
