Overview

An Existential Therapy Approach to Finding Meaning in Traumatic Experiences, A Society of Psychotherapy Workshop with Dr Simon Wharne

This will take the form of a presentation with Q & A

I will present on findings from the book: 'Psychological Growth After Trauma: Insights from Phenomenological Research.'

I will answer questions which come up from that presentation. I will then lead a discussion on how existential therapists might respond when clients bring emotive experiences to sessions, experiences which we think of as traumatic.

Learning Objective Participants Can Expect From This Event

  • A better understanding of the variety and depth of experiences which we label as traumatic, as understood from a phenomenological perspective.
  • A better understanding of how existential therapy practitioners might work with clients who bring concerns about traumatic experiences.
  • An understanding of how challenging experiences open our awareness of uncomfortable truths about our existence.

Who is This Workshop Appropriate For?

  • Existential Therapy practitioners, other psychotherapy practitioners, students and those who are interested in existential theory.

How May This Workshop Impact Your Practice?

  • Insights will be gained into the lived experience of a variety of experiences which can be labelled as traumatic. Some awareness will be developed around how to sit with clients as traumatic experiences come up in sessions.
