Curious about art history but not sure where to begin? This welcoming, two-hour session will help you explore how artists across time have responded to the world around them. From colour and composition to meaning and message, you’ll learn how to look at art in new ways.

What will this course cover?

You’ll explore how art reflects and shapes identity, history and society. You’ll learn how artists use space, form, colour and technique to communicate ideas and feelings, and how art can express personal, political or cultural messages.

What will I get out of this course?

By the end of the session, you’ll have a better understanding of key art movements and styles, and the tools to look at and talk about art in a more thoughtful way.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills or experience?

This course is ideal for beginners or anyone curious about art history. You don’t need any previous experience or specialist knowledge, just an interest in learning something new. It’s also a great starting point for engaging in cultural studies.

What do I need to bring with me?

You don’t need any special equipment. You’re welcome to bring a pen and notebook if you’d like to take notes or jot down ideas.

How is the class taught, and will I be expected to do work between sessions?

Group sessions are led by a subject specialist via Teams video calls. The WEA approach to learning is inclusive and interactive, meaning there will be opportunities to take part in group discussions and share your own knowledge and opinions, should you wish to.

What do I need to bring to sessions?

You don't need any specialist equipment for this class. However, you might want to bring along a pen and paper to take notes.

What can I do after I've finished the course?

Your tutor will highlight courses that you might be interested in progressing to.
