This course will explore important authors, themes and ideas from across the centuries - from Shakespeare to the modern day.
You’ll look at how writers use the written word to reflect the world around them and how British literature has changed over time. Whether you’re new to reading or just want a refresher, this course is all about discovering the joy of literature.
What will this course cover?
You’ll explore key periods in British literature and consider how literature has responded to historical, cultural and social change. We’ll look at a range of influential authors and the genres they shaped.

You’ll gain a better understanding of British literature and how it connects to real life. By the end of the session, you’ll feel more confident talking about books, writers and ideas.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills or experience?
This course is ideal for beginners or anyone curious about British literature. You don’t need any previous experience or specialist knowledge, just an interest in learning something new. It’s also a great starting point for engaging in cultural studies.
What do I need to bring with me?
You don’t need any special equipment. You’re welcome to bring a pen and notebook if you’d like to take notes or jot down ideas.
