This course will introduce students to the versatility of clay as a sculptural material.
Participants will be introduced to techniques to make ceramic sculpture using pinch pot, coil-building and slab-building techniques. You will also learn a range of slip decorating techniques, for example, sgraffito and slip-trailing.
Week 1 - Handbuilding
Demonstrate and practise handbuilding techniques - coiling, pinching,
Finish a piece to be glazes on week 3
Week 2 - Handbuilding
Demonstrate and practise slab building/surface textures with tools/found objects
Week 3 - Surface decoration
Slip surface decoration - sgraffito, slip trailing, painting.
Glazing - Brushing/dipping/pouring
Please note: Per person the course price includes 6 kg white earthenware clay, slip (5 colours), glaze (white and transparent) and two kiln firings per. objects made. It is possible for students to purchase clay during the course. Additional clay will be charged at £4 per 1 kg of fired work. Work should be paid for on collection (cash only).
Collecting work: Students will be notified when their work is ready to collect after the course. Work made must be collected within 14 days after the final session. Please make arrangements with your tutor. There will be 4 fixed pick up days/times. We are unable to store students work for longer than this time.
*Work can be damaged during the firing process.
Please wear an apron or old clothes.

Lauren Ilsley is a sculptor who has been working with clay for over 10 years. She obtained her Masters degree in ceramics from the Royal College of Art, and is a tutor and technician alongside her practice. To view her work click here.
