Description

This intensive 10 hour class (across 2 days) will introduce students to the versatility of clay as a sculptural material.

Students be guided through making forms through pinch pots, coil building, slab building and slip decoration.

Day 1 - Handbuilding

Coiling forms

Slab building forms

Pinching forms

Creating texture on forms

Day 2 - Decorating

Slip surface decoration: sgraffito, slip trailing, painting.

Please note: Per person the course price includes 6 kg white earthenware clay, slip (5 colours), glaze (white and transparent) and two kiln firings per. objects made. It is possible for students to purchase clay during the course. Additional clay will be charged at £4 per 1 kg of fired work. Work should be paid for on collection (cash only).

Due to the time it takes for the clay to dry and be biscuit fired, the sculptures will be glazed by the tutors after the course.

Collecting work: Students will be notified when their work is ready to collect after the course. Work made must be collected within 14 days after the final session. Please make arrangements with your tutor. There will be 4 fixed pick up days/times. We are unable to store students work for longer than this time.

*Work can be damaged during the firing process.

Please wear an apron or old clothes.

Course dates: Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th January 2017

Course times: 10am - 4pm (1 hour break for lunch)

Tutors: Alex Simpson & Lauren Ilsley

Alex Simpson obtained her masters in Ceramics from the Royal College of Art. She works as a technician at the RCA and at a school. Her own practice uses fired and unfired clay to create sculptures and installations. To view her work click here.

Lauren Ilsley is a sculptor who has been working with clay for over 10 years. She obtained her Masters degree in ceramics from the Royal College of Art, and is a tutor and technician alongside her practice. To view her work click here.
