Event description

Description

Cardiff University is a strategic partner of Citizens Cymru Wales, the national home of community organising. Citizens Cymru Wales builds alliances of civil society organisations in local communities (churches, schools, mosques, union branches, residents’ groups etc) and trains people to take action together to tackle the causes of social injustice, hold decision-makers to account, and to work together for the common good.

Community organising is based on a model developed in the USA (Obama was a community organiser in Chicago) and since Citizens Cymru Wales was formed in 2014, hundreds of local people have been trained to ‘organise their community for change’, persuading employers to pay the Living Wage, working with councils to resettle Syrian refugees, campaigning for free buses, new zebra crossings and footpaths to make life safer for young people, and many other campaigns besides.

This course will provide a basic introduction to community organising and help participants understand how they can work with Citizens Cymru Wales to increase their research impact by turning it into action, engage with diverse local communities effectively, train and and develop students and staff, and help fulfil the university’s civic mission as a corporate citizen of Cardiff and the wider city region.
