Event description

Description

Subject? - This workshop is designed to introduce attendees to the role of supervising students for their dissertation as part of the online distance learning postgraduate programmes in public health and primary care. It applies (MPH or MRES).

How long? - It usually lasts 1.5 to 2 hours, and flexible in its' content and delivery.

What's it like? - Along with some core learning objectives, there is usually discussion about different aspects of supervising masters students, supervising online students many of whom live in different countries, and understanding the process for the online MPH/MRES.

What does it cover:-

- a background to the format and content of the MPH and MRES

- a general introduction to the dissertation process

- developing your approach to supervision

- what is expected of supervisors and their students

- opportunities and challenges for working with virtual students

- overview of further guidance and support.

What it doesn't cover:-

- whilst the workshop will cover some basic approaches to supervision, its' focus is on the MPH/MRES. Those wanting a more general session on supervision as a whole, need to explore opportunities with the Centre for Academic Research Development (CARD) along with the UoM PGCert in Higher Education programme.

Who can attend? - anyone who is eligible to supervise at this level (i.e. usually has a PhD, or close to completing, in a health-related discipline, who is interested in becoming a supervisor on this programme). The training can also benefit people who are still relatively new to supervising on the MPH/MRES and/or want a general top-up.

Please contact Roger.harrison@manchester.ac.uk (Course Unit Leader) or Andrew.Jones@manchester.ac.uk (Dissertation tutor) if you're not sure.
