Description

An Introduction to Dramatherapy – ‘The Holding Pen’

What is Dramatherapy? How effective can it be with a multitude of client groups and within a rapidly developing, yet also constricting, world? How is it effective as other creative therapies?

“Dramatherapy – that’s just acting, right?”

Well, it may involve this aspect, yet it can be far from ‘get up and act’, of which this presentation aims to highlight and re-evaluate the above preconception.

HCPC-registered Dramatherapist Louise Whiteley outlines the concepts and importance of Dramatherapy. She reflects upon her current practice of working with primary and secondary children who have been permanently excluded, aspects of working in educational settings, evidenced-based practice and the impact that the environment can have on psychotherapy practice. Within this practice, the concept of the ‘holding pen’ can be both metaphorical and literal.

Louise Whiteley holds an MA in Dramatherapy from Derby University. She has been a practicing Dramatherapist since January 2017 within a Pupil Referral Unit. Throughout her current practice and past clinical placements, Louise has experience of working with children aged 5-17 with ASD, ODD, ADHD, SEBD, attachment disorders, developmental trauma, anxiety, low self-esteem, grief, depression, and those experiencing past or present abuse. She is a member of the British Association of Dramatherapists (BADth).

Louise also holds a BA in Theatre and Performance Studies from Warwick University and has vast theatrical experience spanning over 15 years.
