Event description

Description

Genetics is a field currently undergoing a revolution. The human genome was first sequenced in 2001 at a cost of approximately $100 million; today it costs a little over $1,000. There is little doubt we live in a time where sequencing your own genome is a real possibility, but exactly what this means is a difficult question to answer.

In this short course, Dr Lawrence Bellamy from University College London will give an overview of the fundamentals of genetics. The course will begin with the discovery of the laws of inheritance by Gregor Mendel in the 1860s and look at how our understanding of Genetics has since developed. We will conclude by asking more complex questions such as the role of genetics on behaviour and evolution.

The course will run for six, 90-minute sessions, every Thursday from 21 June to 26 July.

The course costs £225 (£190 Ri Members) for six sessions, including all course materials and refreshments. The course is for interest only, with no qualification, examination, or certificate of attendance at its conclusion.

By booking to attend events at the Royal Institution, you confirm that you have read and agree to the Ri's event terms and conditions.
