COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course will seek to foster an imaginative approach to glass as an artist’s medium, touching on a wide variety of techniques and giving the student a basis from which further, more specialized investigation into the medium can be carried out.
Students will begin with a series of short, hands-on workshops demonstrating a variety of glass techniques ranging from glass-cutting skills, tack and full fusing, slumping over fibre, mould-making and open-face casting. We will experiment with inclusions in glass as well as the decoration of glass with etching cream and sandblasting using different resists. Firing schedules and the use and preparation of different types of glass will also be discussed. Participants will become familiar with the essential properties of glass and its subsequent applications and, over the eight-week period, will gain enough working knowledge of the medium to allow them to create works of a more individual nature.
The course will be complemented with slide lectures.
