Event Details

Hedge-laying is a craft that has been used for centuries to rejuvenate ageing hedges.

Left to its own devices, a hedgerow will grow into a line of trees. In contrast, a laid hedge becomes thick and bushy, providing an effective boundary for livestock and a valuable wildlife habitat. Once a hedge has been laid, regular trimming will keep it in good order for up to 50 years.

Join us at Forty Hall Farm for a one-day introduction to hedge-laying. This hands-on course will combine the theory of hedge-laying with lots of practical experience out on the Farm.

The course will be led by Clive Leeke. Clive is a traditional hedge layer and a member of the National Hedgelaying Society. He has run his business Hedgecraft since 1988, when he began to seek out the old craftsmen who were still laying hedges using traditional methods. This will be the third winter in a row that Clive has joined us to run a hedge-laying course and we're looking forward to welcoming him back.

All participants will have a chance to practice hedge laying, and all materials and equipment will be provided. Places are £55 per person, plus an online booking fee. The course fee includes an organic lunch and all refreshments, and there are a maximum of ten places.
