An Introduction to IT Skills: The Basics

This course will introduce you to the very basics of Information Technology (IT) to enable you to develop the digital skills you need for life and work or further study. Over 5-weeks you will learn how to use a desktop computer to create, edit and handle information as well as connect safely to the Internet. You'll grow in confidence through a series of simple tasks each week and have fun while doing so. The group is small and you'll be supported by two friendly tutors who will guide you at a pace that suits you.

We'll start at the very beginning with switching on and logging into the computer; then explore the screen, keyboard and mouse; create a variety of simple documents using MS Word; get online safely and learn how to manage cookies (the digital kind!).

Location and facilities

This course is delivered in an IT suite at Brittany House, an Exeter College site close to the city centre. You will be taught by two friendly and supportive tutors. You will be shown how to operate a college desktop computer. If you have a smartphone, please bring this to class.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for people who may need support to handle and use digital devices for the first time and for those seeking to develop basic IT skills. You will need to complete an Exeter College enrolment form at the first session.

Commitment: we ask learners to try and commit to the full 5-week course to enable everyone to get the most from the sessions.

Courses are popular and we run a waiting list on our Eventbrite courses, please cancel your ticket, or advise us before the course starts if you are no longer able to attend so we can offer your place to somebody else.
