This course will explore how artists in the 20th and 21st centuries broke the rules of traditional art to try new ways of seeing, thinking and creating. From bold shapes and colours to abstract ideas and everyday objects, modern art asks us to look differently.

What will this course cover?

You’ll explore some key movements in modern art and the ideas behind them. We’ll look at how artists responded to major events, social change, and new ways of thinking during the 20th century.

What will I get out of this course?

You’ll gain confidence in looking at and talking about modern art. By the end of the session, you’ll better understand what makes it different, why it matters, and how to enjoy it on your own terms.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills or experience?

This course is ideal for beginners or anyone curious about modern art. You don’t need any previous experience or specialist knowledge, just an interest in learning something new. It’s also a great starting point for engaging in cultural studies.

What do I need to bring with me?

You don’t need any special equipment. You’re welcome to bring a pen and notebook if you’d like to take notes or jot down ideas.

How is the class taught, and will I be expected to do work between sessions?

Group sessions are led by a subject specialist via Teams video calls. The WEA approach to learning is inclusive and interactive, meaning there will be opportunities to take part in group discussions and share your own knowledge and opinions, should you wish to.

What do I need to bring to sessions?

You don't need any specialist equipment for this class. However, you might want to bring along a pen and paper to take notes.

Your tutor will highlight courses that you might be interested in progressing to.
