Description

A one-day workshop, where you will learn the basics of Still Life painting, using the sight-size method. You will learn how to accurately draw an object from life, the basics of blocking in shadow-shapes, colour mixing and composition. This course aims to introduce you to the basics of indirect painting, from which you can build upon with further practice and study. Please bring 3 objects to work from with you.

Recommended materials by tutor.

Please bring with you:

  • Wooden Palette

  • Refined Walnut Oil or Bleached Linseed Oil

  • Rectified Turpentine

  • Palette Cup

  • Palette Knife (preferably tear shape)

  • Masking Tape

  • Brushes: Tintoretto (oval shape) Hog's Hair (not synthetic), sizes 8 - 18

  • Oils: Note that Cornelissens, Rembrandt, Old Holland and Schminke are advised, but Winsor & Newton is fine for this course.

  • Ivory Black

  • Raw Umber

  • Cobalt Blue (or Ultramarine)

  • Alizarine Crimson

  • Cadmium Red (or Vermillion Extra)

  • Cadmium Yellow

  • Yellow Ochre

  • Flake White (or soft mixing white, which is Titanium White + Zinc White)


The workshop will take place in the North Gallery, please arrive via the Gallery entrance on The Mall.

There will be a break for lunch between 1pm - 2pm. Participants are welcome to bring their own lunch and use the café facilities where they will receive 1 free hot drink and also 10% discount in the bookshop on the day.

Please consider how you will transport your wet painting and drawings as there will be no overnight storage available.
