Event description

Description

Aim: To gain an understanding of the basic principles of shooting black and white film and to come away with the skills and confidence to shoot your own film.

Suitable for: Any age, a basic understanding of photography will be needed, however no experience of film photography is required.

Method: Each session will involve classroom instruction in my relaxed style, including demonstrations and plenty of opportunity to put new skills into practice with hands-on practical experience.

Structure: The 'Introduction to Shooting 35mm Black and White Film' workshop is a 2-hour session at my studio in Thornton-Cleveleys. With a maximum of only four attendees there's plenty of opportunity to learn at your own pace and put the theory into practice. We will look at the process of shooting, the characteristics of film, equipment required and some techniques. Everyone attending will have access to a Facebook group for support and to ask questions.

Materials: Some of my film camera equipment will be made available for attendees to use during the workshop if required.

Date: Thursday 20th June
Time: 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Location: Hardwick Studio, 1B Ingleway, Thornton-Cleveleys, FY5 2PQ

Tickets: Eventbrite

Price: £25.

Requirements:
  • A roll of 35mm black and white film, either 24 or 36 exposures.
  • A 35mm film camera, preferably an SLR but I will have some available to use if not
  • Some prior experience with photography
  • No experience of film photography

Recommended film for this workshop:
  • Ilford FP4plus or HP5plus
  • Bergger Pancro 400 (My personal favourite)
  • Kentmere 100 or 400
  • Fomapan 100 or 400
  • Lomography Earl Grey and Lady Grey
  • Rollei RPX or Retro 100 and 400

Not recommended if you intend to also come along on the Developing workshop:
  • Kodak TMax films

It is possible to develop these films in the chemistry I use but for best results they require a different developer.

AVOID THESE FILMS if you intend to also come along on the Developing workshop:
  • Ilford XP2
  • Fujifilm Neopan 400CN
  • or other films requiring a C41 process

If you have any questions regarding this workshop or what film to shoot, then please get in touch.

FREE FILM

I will include a free roll of 35mm black and white film if you are attending both the 'Shooting' and 'Developing' workshops when booked at the same time.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you, Richard
