COURSE DESCRIPTION
We will begin the course with a brief introduction to the process of stone carving, as it is taught at the School, starting with objective drawing, contrasting it with tonal and other methods, such as continuous line drawing, as the basis for all the School’s teaching. There will then be an example of a maquette, modelled from life and cast, as a reference point for a carving, which will also be available for reference, as part of the teaching. This stage will also include an introduction to the tools and a demonstration of their usage and sharpening.
You will then have the choice to use one of three existing casts of either the ear, eye or nose of Michelangelo’s ‘David’. We will draw and transfer the design to stone, with preliminary modelling in clay, and then commencing the carving on a piece of stone.
You will leave the course with knowledge of how to approach and execute your own simple carving project at home.
What’s included: all teaching, and your tools and materials for the stone carving.
What you will need to bring: a steel tape measure, an A3 sketchbook, pencil, rubber and ruler. Please bring along any set squares or clay modelling tools you may have. Please wear old clothes you don’t mind spoiling, or bring an apron, and wear fully closed, protective shoes at all times.
