An Introduction to the Identification of Plant bugs

This identification workshop aims to cover in some detail the largest terrestrial bug family, for which there are over 230 species present in Britain. Our tutors, Jim Flanagan & Tristan Bantock run the two national recording schemes for terrestrial bugs and will be able to provide participants much knowledge and experience in becoming more familiar with this group. Microscope facilities and specimens from the Museum’s collection as well as some from the tutors own personal collections will be made available to participants. There will also be a range (genera and species) identification keys for use to help participants put names to specimens. There are around 40-50 or more plant bugs, that with a little practice can be readily identified in the field or from photographs. The main aim of this workshop will be to help participants identify these and to provide resources and knowledge for the identification of other less easily identified species.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided but participants should bring a packed lunch or use World Museum cafe.

Access: There are lifts between each of the floors and assistance dogs are permitted.
