The IStructE North West Young Members Hub welcomes Dr Keerthi Ranasinghe of Milner Associates, for an introduction to designing with timber to Eurocode 5.
The session will cover:
- The Difference between structural timber and other materials.
- Strength classes - what is the criteria for selection and why do we have higher strength classes when they are not readily available in the markets?
- Service classes - where does this guidance come from? Why do tables always declare values to service class 1?
- Duration classes - to what duration have the strength and stiffness properties been assigned, and why? How to determine the duration class for combinations of actions?
- Timber Connections - underlying principles of connection design. How easy/difficult would it be to follow the standard? What are the pitfalls, and how do we avoid them. How do we simplify screw connection designs.
- Shrinkage of timber - how it matters to most of our designs. How to allow for shrinkage for robust designs.
- Durability - how do we design for durability
