PEAT Outcome - Relevant legal knowledge

UK immigration law is fast becoming one of the most important topics in the current political climate. A knowledge of at least the basics of immigration law is fundamental no matter what area of practice you are in. Immigration law can permeate and intertwine with a huge variety of different areas. Commercial and corporate, family and criminal lawyers are but a few of the types of solicitors which should at least have a grasp of the fundamentals of immigration law.

The law in this area has been described as “a total nightmare” because the most seemingly insignificant decisions have the potential to cause a visa application to be granted or refused. It is therefore imperative that practitioners are able to understand the need to signpost clients to seek professional advice.

After this Zoom webinar, delegates will:

  • Recognise the different sources of law from which UK immigration law is derived;
  • Understand who is subject to immigration control and the main types of immigration permission available;
  • Have an overview of the main visa categories in the Immigration Rules;
  • Know the basics of EU Free Movement law and the new EU Settlement Scheme;
  • Understand the fundamentals of British nationality law;

This webinar is aimed at practitioners who wish to better understand the building blocks of UK immigration law and for practitioners who wish to be able to better signpost and advise their clients towards specialist advice and anyone working in the field of immigration law.

The speaker is Bilaal Shabbir. Bilaal is a Trainee Solicitor and Head of Court of Session Litigation at MBS Solicitors. He practises in the fields of public law, family law and commercial dispute resolution. He therefore has substantial experience in providing advice where the two areas of law overlap or are in apparent conflict. He is a member of the Immigration Law sub-committee of the Law Society of Scotland and a former member of the of the Rights of Audience sub-committee which dealt with the admission of solicitor-advocates in Scotland. He is an author for Free Movement, one of the UK’s leading immigration and asylum LAW blogs and is currently a tutor on the Public Law course at the University of Edinburgh. He has been nominated for and won the ‘Paralegal of the Year’ category at the Scottish Legal Awards.
