Event description

Description

Interested in keeping bees, but don’t know what’s involved or how to get started? This one-day workshop will give you an overview of the craft of beekeeping in which our experienced beekeeper will cover the fundamental requirements for bee and hive management. You will gain a real feel for the craft of beekeeping and be able to decide whether this is a hobby you wish to pursue.

The 5-hour course will begin with a practical look inside a hive. You will learn about the honeybee colony and beekeeping year, how to set up an apiary, bee behaviour and the role of the beekeeper. After lunch we will discuss how to choose essential equipment and bee stock and learn about specific aspects of urban beekeeping. You will also gain an understanding of the cost and time involved, but also the benefits you will reap in return. The day will end with another exploration inside a hive and a taste of fresh honey.

Protective beekeeping suits and gloves will be provided but please wear long-sleeved clothing, long trousers, and wellies or sturdy boots. Please do not wear perfume or aftershave, drink alcohol, eat a banana, or work with horses on the day. If you wear reading glasses, please bring them.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Eric Beaumont has been a professional beekeeper for nine years and manages 40 colonies of bees across urban North London and into rural Essex. Beekeeping was a hobby for his father after the war and Eric has fond childhood memories which have inspired him since. He uses this knowledge and inspiration to teach beekeeping skills and spread the message that bees represent much more than honey.
