In this friendly two-hour session, you’ll explore key writers, ideas and voices from across the globe. We’ll also look at what these stories have in common, and what they can teach us about the world today.

What will this course cover?

You’ll gain confidence in reading and talking about literature from around the world. You may discover new favourite writers or genres, and you’ll learn how stories connect people across cultures and continents.

What will I get out of this course?

You’ll explore a range of texts, authors and themes from world literature. We’ll look at how writers use language to express identity, culture, conflict and connection.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills or experience?

This course is ideal for beginners or anyone curious about world literature. You don’t need any previous experience or specialist knowledge, just an interest in learning something new. It’s also a great starting point for engaging in cultural studies.

What do I need to bring with me?

You don’t need any special equipment. You’re welcome to bring a pen and notebook if you’d like to take notes or jot down ideas.

How is the class taught, and will I be expected to do work between sessions?

Group sessions are led by a subject specialist via Teams video calls. The WEA approach to learning is inclusive and interactive, meaning there will be opportunities to take part in group discussions and share your own knowledge and opinions, should you wish to.

What do I need to bring to sessions?

You don't need any specialist equipment for this class. However, you might want to bring along a pen and paper to take notes.

What can I do after I've finished the course?

Your tutor will highlight courses that you might be interested in progressing to.
