This two-hour course offers a first step into the world of poetry from across the globe. You’ll explore short poems from a range of cultures and countries, and begin to understand how poetry reflects different ways of seeing and living.
What will this course cover?
You’ll gain confidence in reading and enjoying poetry from a variety of cultures. You’ll also discover new voices and perspectives that may inspire you to keep reading, or even to write your own.
What will I get out of this course?
You’ll read and discuss a selection of world poems, discovering how poets use sound, structure and imagery. Themes may include nature, identity, love, protest, migration or belonging. We’ll also look at how poetic traditions vary, and what they share.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills or experience?
This course is ideal for beginners or anyone curious about world poetry. You don’t need any previous experience or specialist knowledge, just an interest in learning something new. It’s also a great starting point for engaging in cultural studies.
What do I need to bring with me?
You don’t need any special equipment. You’re welcome to bring a pen and notebook if you’d like to take notes or jot down ideas.

Group sessions are led by a subject specialist via Teams video calls. The WEA approach to learning is inclusive and interactive, meaning there will be opportunities to take part in group discussions and share your own knowledge and opinions, should you wish to.
