About this event

  • 6 hours

This half-day workshop is organised by the Education, Childhood and Youth (ECY) Pathways and is open to all ESRC and non-ESRC funded PhD and MA Social Research students within the WRDTP’s seven partner universities. Whilst this workshop is aimed at ECY Pathway students, PGRs from all seven interdisciplinary Pathways are welcome to attend.

Publishing research in academic journals is part of academic life that, for some, begins during their doctoral studies. But writing a research article and then getting it published is a non-trivial endeavour: in 2022, Elsevier, one of the largest publishers in the sector received over 2.7 million submissions, but published only around 600,000 (Hyland, 2023). Our hope is that this workshop will help ensure your article makes the cut. The aim is to provide a grounding in how to write for journal by exploring what journal editors are looking for in a research article, and how you can tailor your writing to meet those expectations. We will begin by discussing how to select an appropriate journal. Next, we will explore strategies for tailoring your writing to that journal, underscoring the relevance and significance of your research. Lastly, we will consider what happens after submission, and explore strategies for dealing with the review process.

The aims of this session are to:

– shed light on the process of writing and publishing a research article;

– develop students’ capacity to write effectively for publication pruposes.
