An Iolaire

In 1918, men from Lewis and Harris were returning home on His Majesty's Yacht, An Iolaire. On New Year's Day 1919, in sight of Stornoway harbour, a storm hit and she was driven on to the 'Biastan Thuilm rocks' (the Beasts of Holm rocks) and sank. Over 200 men were drowned. The loss of the ship is one of the most tragic events to befall the Western Isles. Through drama and song, P7 pupils from Taobh na Pàirce (Parkside Primary, Edinburgh's dedicated Gaelic primary school) take us back to that time. Written by William Hershaw and directed by Ann McCluskey, CnaG, the play is performed in Gaelic with an English synopsis provided.
