Event description
A lecture from Egyptologist Dr Campbell Price followed by a drinks reception from the Dante Society, Manchester.

About this Event

Italian circus strongman-turned-explorer Giovanni Batista Belzoni (1778-1823) made an indelible mark on Egyptian archaeology. Ever the showman, his finds – and their unique method of presentation to the public – created some of the mystique we now associate with ‘Ancient Egypt’. 200 years after the publication of his seminal book of his adventures, this lecture reflects on Belzoni’s methods, discoveries, and their reception in the Western World.

This event will also offer the chance to view The Portico Library's original, illustrated edition of Belzoni's publication.

The talk will be followed by complimentary wine and nibbles.

Dr Campbell Price is Curator of Egypt and Sudan at Manchester Museum, one of the UK’s largest Egyptology collections. Whilst studying Egyptology at the University of Liverpool, he worked on several archaeological projects in Egypt. His main research interests include Egyptian monumental expression and the popular reception of ‘Ancient Egypt’ in the West. Campbell has published widely, lectured internationally, and makes regular appearances on TV and radio.

Co-hosts: The Portico Library & Società Dante Alighieri Manchester.
