Event description

Description

The unparalleled success of The Sopranos (1999) has led to a tsunami of male anti-heroes colonizing our television screens… and tablets. Immoral characters that audiences just love and love to hate are evident through the portrayal of Dexter Morgan (Dexter 2006-2013), Jax Teller (Sons of Anarchy 2008-2014), Frank Underwood (House of Cards 2013-), Ray Donovan (Ray Donovan 2013-), Vic Mackey (The Shield 2002-2008), Walter White (Breaking Bad 2008-2013) and the list goes on. Indeed, screenwriters approaching an anti-hero screenplay for television are spoilt through the abundance of blueprints. But what about the female anti-hero? How do screenwriters approach her morality and successfully engage spectators?

In contrast to her male counterpart, the female anti-hero has received little mainstream attention. In male driven anti-hero shows, females are typically portrayed as the “ball-busting” wife, with Camilla Soprano and Skyler White being prime examples. The tide is changing though through female anti-heroes such as: Nancy Botwin (Weeds 2005-2012), Sarah Linden (The Killing 2011-2014), Jessica Jones (Jessica Jones 2015-) and most recently, Floyd Gerhardt (Fargo 2016).

Industry screenwriter and screenwriting Practice-Led Ph.D. researcher, Levi Dean has answers to this enigma. And, during his one-day workshop, an offer she can’t refuse, he will explore the critical components required to yield audience engagement. Levi’s components are grounded in the field of moral psychology, unveiling why audience engagement is so important and how the screenwriter utilises his systematic approach to form it. Specifically, he will examine the pilot episode because this is the first time an audience and female anti-hero will meet. Be sure to bring your smartphone/tablet, as Levi will provide an interactive and informing lecture.
