Event description
An introduction to Darknet markets, fast becoming crucial sources of illicit drugs that can be monitored for sale and buyer behaviour

About this Event

Background: The deep web is a part of the World Wide Web where contents are not indexed by the standard web search-engines. The Darknet refers to the portions of the deep web that are purposefully not open to public view or are hidden networks whose architecture is superimposed on that of the Internet. Darknet markets provide a host site for the sale of illegal drugs, along with other illicit activity (some legal). For example, the Silk Road forum operated between 2011 and 2013 with an estimated USD1.2 billion in sales, involving 150,000 customers and 4,000 distributors. Although Silk Road and at least other six sites have been shut down, the sale and exchange of illicit goods continued as alternative marketplaces sprang up; such sites are considered one of the crucial supplier channels of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids. Web-IQ has developed a search engine that allows the ongoing and close to real time monitoring and analysis of Darknet data; and the company currently collaborates with the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addictions (EMCDDA) to analyse trends of the illicit drug sale, marketing and buyer behaviour. Web-IQ will present their portfolio in the Technology Corner of the Futures Zone of the Lisbon Addictions 2019 Conference.
