Event description

Description

The Analytics Network, part of the Operational Research Society, invites you to join to our next event that will take place at London Business School.

On this occasion, we will be hosting three different speakers covering a wide range of topics, each followed by a Q&A. At the end of the event, there will be plenty of time for networking

Timetable:

6:00pm-6:30pm Registration

6:30pm-8:00pm Talks

-1st Speaker: Bruce Hardie, London Business School Professor of Marketing, "Valuing Subscription-Based Businesses Using Publicly Disclosed Customer Data"

Talk Abstract: The growth of subscription-based commerce has changed the types of data that firms report to external shareholders. More than ever, companies are discussing and disclosing information on the number of customers acquired and lost, customer lifetime value, and other data. This has fuelled an increasing interest in linking the value of a firm’s customers to the overall value of the firm, with the term “customer-based corporate valuation” being used to describe such efforts.

This talk presents a framework for valuing subscription-based firms that is based on models of customer acquisition and retention that reflect the empirical realities associated with these behaviours, and makes use of a valuation model that meets the standards of finance professionals. A crucial aspect of this framework is that the associated models can be estimated using publically disclosed data. This is illustrated using data from several US public companies.

-2nd Speaker: Harvey Lewis, Associate Partner at EY, "Tax knowledge management using R, Shiny and Leaflet"

Talk Abstract: In this presentation, Harvey will describe the challenge of monitoring news and other sources of information for changes in tax legislation around the world. He will present a new application, called SALIENT, which uses a combination of active supervised machine learning, natural language processing and simple heuristics to spot changes in tax rules. Harvey will explore the benefits and challenges of using R, Shiny and Leaflet for this task, and will examine the wider opportunities of using an active machine learning framework and its implications for future skills.

-3rd Speaker: Michael Mortenson, Senior Teaching Fellow on the MSc in eBusiness Management at Warwick University, "IoT modelling via mobile phones"

Talk Abstract to follow.
