We are pleased to present our panel event ‘Anarchy, Displacement and Destitution: What future for Myanmar?’, in collaboration with NGO United Against Inhumanity. We will be in conversation with Sir Charles Petrie, Adelina Kamal, Dr Jeff Crisp, and ‘Alexia’, with other speakers to be confirmed. We hope this panel event will importantly raise awareness on the devastating situation, and foster dialogue and new ideas on the political and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar.

Sir Charles Petrie was UN Resident Coordinator for Myanmar from 2003 to 2007, and has held other senior positions throughout his 30-year career in the UN, serving as UN Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General for Somalia, and Executive Representative of the Secretary General for Burundi. From February 2012 to March 2015, Charles Petrie upon the Myanmar government’s invitation, coordinated an initiative to facilitate discussions between the Government and Ethnic Armed Groups.

Adelina Kamal has worked with ASEAN for over 25 years, leading the AHA Centre in facilitating ASEAN’s response to major disasters and prior to that, working for the ASEAN Secretariat in various roles including leading ASEAN’s response to 2008 Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar as the organisation’s first ever large-scale humanitarian response operation on the ground.

Dr Jeff Crisp has held senior positions with UNHCR as Head of Policy Development and Evaluation, and Refugees International as Senior Director for Policy and Research. He has also worked for the Independent Commission on International Humanitarian Issues, and the British Refugee Council. He has first-hand experience of humanitarian operations around the world and has lectured and published widely on refugee and migration issues.

‘Alexia’ is a young activist who was a leader of the resistance movement after the February 2021 coup d'etat by the Myanmar military. She organised protests in Yangon and was subsequently forced into hiding.
