Anatomy for Art Life Drawing Online course
Featuring Dr. Susan Whiten, senior anatomy lecturer at St Andrews University (now
retired), Jen Robson and Kirsty Whiten, artist-tutors.
Who are BOW?
Body of Work Life Drawing, are two successful Fife based women artists, Jennifer Robson and Kirsty Whiten, who worked together during lockdown to create an online life drawing course that inspires, encourages and nurtures students of life drawing.
They have created two online courses including Refreshers/Beginners and Anatomy for Art in collaboration with anatomist Dr Susan Whiten. They are currently creating their third course this Spring. They also host regular tutored in person life drawing courses and day workshops.
About the Anatomy Course
The course is suitable for anyone with some experience of life drawing. It will be ideal for
anyone who wants to make more convincing drawings of the human figure, or has an interest in understanding anatomy and translating it into their own style.
The drawing tutorials introduce some inspiring and challenging approaches, to deepen
your experience of life drawing.
What should I expect from Anatomy for Art ?
The Skeleton 1 & 2
Layering drawings, making studies of the body’s scaffolding in many different poses
Muscles and Movement 1 & 2
Working fast with the ‘line of action’ in short poses, creating contemporary écorché studies
on tracing paper to understand the layers under the skin
Focus on arms and hands
All our tips and tricks for tackling hands in life drawing – finding position, scale, forming
convincing impressions
Focus on legs and feet
Finding the form to get a life-like impression of the model in the time you have
The head and neck in life drawing
Learning how the structure of the skull and muscles in the neck work, capturing a quick
and confident figure from head to toe
Focus on the face
Being deliberate in mapping proportions, structure and features of the face, approaches
for portraiture
You will have the opportunity to make multiple drawings of our skeleton 'Raoul' 💀 alongside
real models posing. You will make drawings of the model and use references to imagine
where the Skeletal Muscular System lies. You will learn and internalise the structure of the
body, which will free you up to be more expressive - learning the rules so you can break
them!

How do I access the course?
You will receive a link to your inbox to a folder containing 8 video tutorials from artist tutors, and 8 sets of model videos, and a folder of reference material, plus a materials list. You can work through the course as you please, deepening your life drawing practice, all at your own pace, at home.
You get 8 weeks access to allow your to complete the course. There is no set class time, you work through the vids any time that suits you with access 24/7 so you can watch, rewatch and redo as often as you please. An incredible resource for Artists.
