Ancient Cooking Workshop at Avalon Archaeology

Join us around the hearth in the Saxon Longhall at Avalon Archaeology for an immersive journey into the culinary traditions of our ancient ancestors. This full-day, hands-on workshop invites you to explore the craft of historical cooking with:

Marc Cox, archaeologist and food history enthusiast

Julia Bedford, herbalist and professional chef

Together, they’ll guide you through the traditional techniques of ancient food preparation- from gathering wild and field ingredients to preserving and cooking.

What to Expect:

  • learn how our ancestors prepared food, both from the field and from the wild.
  • discover different preservation techniques, including fermentation and smoking
  • engage in practical, hands-on primitive cooking expereinces
  • create some unique dishes familiar to the inhabitants of a Roman Villa or a roundhouse at Glastonbury Lake Village.
