Waterside Foraging Walk at Anglezarke (Autumn Mushrooms & Woodland Exploration)

Anglezarke is a great foraging location, a beautiful and varied landscape of waterside woodland, upland slopes and open moor. The combination of ancient trees and mossy tracks offers fantastic conditions for autumn fungi, and the moorland edge adds another layer of diversity. We’ll be on the lookout for species you might expect in the woods (like porcini and russulas), as well as some of the more "interesting" upland varieties, including grassland fungi such as waxcaps.

This walk is about learning, connecting, and tuning in to the shifting rhythms of the season. You’ll learn how to confidently identify a few common wild mushrooms, how to look for the key features that help you recognise others, and how fungi interact with the surrounding ecology.

We’ll also introduce you to Embodied Foraging, a gentle, sensory-led practice that invites you to experience the woodland in a deeper, more intuitive way. It’s about engaging with place, pace and perception as much as it is about finding edibles.

Practical Info:

This is a slow-paced walk covering about one to two miles depending on detours. Paths can be muddy or slippery if it’s been raining, and some gentle climbing is possible. Please wear boots or wellies and bring waterproofs.

We’ll pause somewhere scenic to eat, so bring a packed lunch and snacks. If we gather enough wild edibles we will head back for a shared tasting session at the end of the forage, a simple fry-up of mushrooms we’ve identified.

What to Bring:

  • Sturdy footwear (boots or wellies)
  • Waterproofs
  • Packed lunch and drink
  • Basket or field bag (optional)
  • Knife, staff, and ID books if you have them (optional)
  • Notebook if you like to take notes

Mushroom foraging courses. Foraging for mushrooms, you will learn to slow down, to connect with the forest and understand how species connect with each other. Learn how the mycorrhizal species help the trees to gather nutrients and support each other, how the saprotrophic species break down dead matter in a way that no other thing in nature can do. The format of a forage course is to liven your palate with a sample or a few of gins made from wild ingredients, gaultheria or sloe or pinecone and many more. Tastes to blow your mind. Then, staffs in hand, a forage walk/ A slow paced wander through the woods, learning about the fungi we find and collecting some in our baskets for the fry up at the end where we get to taste the treats we find. A forage walk is overflowing with wellbeing and mindfulness and is a welcome break from our busy lives.
