Animating Characters with Karolina Glusiec

Hedgehog in the Fog - Yuri Norstein

LIVE CLASS: SATURDAY 11th May 2024

2-4pm BST + 14 DAYS RECORDING ACCESS

We are incredibly excited at LDG to continue this series of Handmade Animation classes with tutor, artist and animation extraordinaire, Karolina Głusiec. Discover how to make your own handmade animations and easily turn your phone and space at home or work into an animation studio! Each stand-alone class in this series takes inspiration from and focusses on a different artist or theme.

This special class is dedicated to a magical film by Yuri Norstein - “Hedgehog in the Fog” from 1975. It will focus on inventing your own animated character and dedicated backgrounds and props to create a multilayer animated sequence. We will watch the film together.

His way of working is, like animation is in general, very time consuming. During the class we will focus more on designing the character and thinking of what kind of personality they are to think of how it would move, where would it be. This class will focus more on character and set design and planning rather than animating and it will blend together some elements from various classes from the Handmade Animation series.

Karolina will explain multiplane animation and will also show some diy ways of using various kinds of light and found materials to create beautiful animations. After the class you are welcome to continue your filmmaking process in your own time - we’re excited to see your results! Please share them with @londondrawinggroup and @karolina.glusiec.teaching

We recommend working in the real time with Karolina, however, if you feel more comfortable working on your own after the class - that’s also great!

This class is a workshop - Karolina will demonstrate the methods and techniques - you are welcome to come up with your own ideas!

Note: you will be working using your phone to capture your work, so, have another device or screen you can watch the class on :)

Suggested Materials:

(If you don't have all of the materials below we still recommend you join us with whatever you have, you may wish to buy some materials after watching the class and you can always draw and animate again with the recording access.)

  • A couple of sheets of acetate or perspex / glass.

  • A lot of paper and card, different colours

  • Drawing and painting materials (ink/paint and brushes, crayons, pencils, pastels… whatever you love using)

  • Charcoal or soft pastels

  • Some sand-like materials such as sugar, salt or coffee

  • Some found materials of your choice that would like to use for your background - it could be leaves, or some magazine cutouts or… maybe something else that you have laying around, like dried flowers, or some random collections of things? Fabric? Something else?

  • Tissue paper and a sponge

  • A couple of dishes for water

  • Scissors and thin wire or fishing line for your character

  • Several sheets of tracing paper

  • You will need a phone / tablet with Stop Motion Studio App installed on it - see info here:

https://www.cateater.com/ - this app is free to use on Android or iOs. We will send you a video on how to use the app once booked but Karo will also take you through this in the class.

  • You will need some kind of phone stand - so not to use your hands when filming your sequence) If you don't have one we will send you a video once you book on how to make one VERY easily out of a cardboard box! Remember that your animation stand is meant to make you see your lightbox surface - depending on the way you are going to be filming it :) make one big enough for yourself 🙂

This class is suitable for all levels!

ARE YOU TRYING TO BOOK VIA THE EVENTBRITE PHONE APP?!

We have been in touch with Eventbrite, and they have informed us that currently you cannot book tickets to online events in their app. It's very frustrating and we have been assured they are working on a solution. In the meantime, we recommend that you book tickets to our events outside of the iOS app - either via a web browser or a desktop. If you book our classes regularly we recommend deleting the eventbrite App.

IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS OR QUESTIONS PLEASE EMAIL :

And that's it!

We're really looking forward to you joining us.
