Description

ALBERTO VAZQUEZ MASTERCLASS AT ECA

From Comic to Animation. A ten-year journey from Birdboy's early sketches

Friday 26 January, Edinburgh College of Art, West Court Theatre, 2PM

In this masterclass at Edinburgh College of Art, multi awarded Spanish Animator Alberto Vazquez will share the 10-year-journey and creative process from the first comic strips to the release of Psiconautas, Vazquez’s first animation feature film. The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the European Film Awards, and it has been recently released in the US by New York-based animation distributor GKIDS..

Unique opportunity to get an insider perspective on the work of Alberto Vazquez, currently one of Europe’s hottest animators.

Cinemaattic collective dedicate a focus into his previous work, including a featured exhibition at Summerhall and CCA Glasgow, a special strand on his artistic influences as part of this year’s Manipulate Visual Arts Festival and the Scottish premiere of Psiconautas.

Alberto will show two of his short films as part of the masterclass. He will engage with the audience to keep an open discussion with attendees into specific issues of the animation development process.

With his distinctive artistic style and dark humour, Alberto’s work articulates an innovative approach to translating the visual techniques and devices from his original comics into animated film. Vazquez and his team share a passion for creating striking work for adult audiences which dares, both through narrative structures and stylistic choices, to consistently challenge filmmaking orthodoxy.

“the simple precision of the hand-drawn characters and of the watercolor world they inhabit provide visual coherence and establish an atmosphere of fascination as well as dread.” (The New York Times)
