Event description

Description

Join Lewisham Library’s crime reading group and meet a local author, ask questions, and discuss her new crime novel, Unlawful Things, set in Deptford.

Anna Sayburn Lane is an award-winning local writer based in South East London. Unlawful Things is her first novel, a historical and literary crime story shortlisted for the Virago/The Pool New Crime Writer Award. Christopher Marlowe, the Elizabethan playwright who was inexplicably stabbed to death in Deptford, as well as themes of right-wing extremism, theology and religion feature, and it’s a compelling and fascinating read.

Anna was inspired by a three-day walk from Southwark to Canterbury, following the route of Chaucer’s pilgrims. It took her through places she used to cover as a newspaper reporter, which sparked memories of some of the stories she used to cover, as well as its literary associations with Marlowe who went to school in Canterbury, had his plays performed at The Rose Theatre in Bankside, and ended his life in Deptford.

The Lewisham Crime Reading Group meets on the 3rd Saturday of every month in Lewisham Library from 10.30 am to 12.00.
