Description

BME experiences in higher education: social justice, inclusion and white privilege.

This session will explore Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) experiences in higher education. It will examine recent statistics on the representation of BME staff and students in higher education and explore how processes of racism, exclusion and marginalisation continue to disadvantage BME groups. The talk will use empirical research which explores BME academic flight from higher education to suggest ways forward for the inclusion of BME focusing on issues of equity and social justice. It will examine how white privilege works to disadvantage those from BME backgrounds and explore how universities can develop good practice for the inclusion of BME groups in higher education.

Kalwant Bhopal is Professor of Education and Social Justice at the University of Birmingham, and Deputy Director of the Centre for Research in Race and Education in the School of Education. She is also Visiting Professor at Harvard University and at Kings College London.

Kalwant’s research focuses on the achievements and experiences of minority ethnic groups in education. She has conducted research on exploring discourses of identity and intersectionality examining the lives of Black minority ethnic groups as well as examining the marginal position of Gypsies and Travellers. Her research specifically explores how processes of racism, exclusion and marginalisation operate in predominantly White spaces with a focus on social justice and inclusion. Her book White Privilege: the myth of a post-racial society was recently published by Policy Press.
