Description

Birth family contact after adoption: Learning from the Northern Irish experience

Adoption provides permanent family placement and legal security for children in care who cannot return to their birth family. Its enduring effect, however, makes adoption a contentious field of child welfare practice, particularly when it is contested by the child’s birth parents. Ongoing contact between the child and their birth family after adoption is sometimes viewed as a way of reconciling the tension between a child’s need for security and belonging in their new family, their need to connect with their origins, and the birth parents’ right to respect for family life. In Northern Ireland there is a particularly open model of adoption, and birth family contact has become the expected norm following contested adoption from care.

This presentation will give an overview of open adoption practice in Northern Ireland, including post-adoption support. It will summarise case law in relation to post-adoption contact, and draw on research with adoptive parents to identify the unique benefits and challenges of children’s meetings with their birth family. It will conclude with discussion of what can be learned from the Northern Irish experience to inform sensitive negotiation and support for contact following adoption.
