Description

Turning the Tide Towards a Low Carbon Future: A Novel New Design for the Severn Barrage - Professor Rod Rainey

As the UK moves towards a more sustainable energy supply, tidal power remains a vast untapped resource. Proposals for an energy generating Severn Barrage date back to the mid-twentieth century but a major stumbing block has always been its environmental impact and effect on shipping operations. In this lecture, Rod Rainey will outline an innovative new design for a lightweight steel barrage, which would generate more energy per year than Hinkley Point C and produce an extremely low cost of energy with minimal environmental impact. Rod will compare it in particular with the new Beatrice offshore wind farm north of Inverness, which is needing several times as much steel to build, per kWh produced.

Biography

Rod Rainey is an eminent offshore engineer with an ability to analyse complex hydro-mechanical systems, which requires a strong mathematical base allied to physical perception. He has applied this to stability of tension leg platforms and ships, wind turbines for ship propulsion, improved hydrodynamic inertia load formulations, high frequency 'ringing' of offshore structures, rogue wave impacts, tidal barrages and wave energy generation. He has degrees in engineering and mathematics from the University of Cambridge, and control engineering from Imperial College London. He worked for many years for Atkins, and is now a director of Rod Rainey and Associates, see www.RRandA.co.uk
