Description

The Association of Guernsey Charities Annual General Meeting 2017 The 2017 AGM is on Tuesday 2nd May at The Peninsula Hotel, Vale, Guernsey, starting at 7.00pm. The evening will start by covering the business of the AGC, with a review of our work over the past year, and information about forthcoming projects. There will be a short break, and opportunity to network with other members. Refreshments will be available. Our guest speaker for this year is Sir Stuart Etherington. Sir Stuart Etherington was appointed chief executive of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) in 1994. Previously he was chief executive of the Royal National Institute for Deaf People, a major UK charity. Stuart is a member of the Economic and Social Committee of the European Union and the Chair of London United. He is chair of the trustees of the Patron's Fund and chaired a cross party review looking at the structure of the regulation of fundraising. He is also an IES Honorary Fellow. He has been a trustee of Business in the Community, the chair of the BBC Appeals Advisory Committee, a member of the Community and Social Affairs Committee of Barclays Bank, former chair of Guidestar UK, treasurer of CIVICUS and chair of CIVICUS Europe, council member of the Institute of Employment Studies, an advisory group member for the Policy Centre at the British Academy and for the Lord Mayor's Trust Initiative. Throughout his career he has been involved in the leadership of voluntary organisations and policies surrounding them. As such he has become a leading commentator, both through his writing and his media profile. His government appointments have included the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit. He has also served on the Cabinet Office Performance and Innovation Unit's Advisory Board on the Voluntary Sector and HM Treasury's Cross Cutting Review on the role of the voluntary sector. He holds degrees in politics, social planning, international relations and an MBA from the London Business School. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from both Brunel and Greenwich University and is an Honorary Visiting Professor at South Bank University and City University London. His leisure pursuits include reading political biographies, going to the theatre, opera and film, watching Surrey County Cricket Club and Charlton Athletic and learning Italian. He is a member of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, The Institute of Strategic Studies, a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a patron of the Dickens in the Borough 2012 project, and a member of the Dickens Fellowship. Stuart was knighted in 2010 for services to the voluntary sector. This event is only open to current members of the Association of Guernsey Charities, plus selected invited guests. It is anticipated that this will be a popular event so pre-registration is required.
