Description

Theme: Curriculum Design and Student Success

The Annual Learning and Teaching Conference is a great opportunity to bring together the University's education community to focus on the enhancement of the student learning experience. It is a key way in which we celebrate learning and teaching excellence as an institution by hearing from keynote speakers who provide an external perspective, and also to share our own good practice across the university.

This year's conference theme is Curriculum Design and Student Success.

The programme focuses on four key themes:

1. Transition and Retention

2. Student Engagement

3. Learning Beyond the Curriculum

4. Inclusive Curriculum

Parallel Sessions

Within each strand there are parallel sessions to choose from, consisting of a selection of interactive workshops and lectures. This year we are going to provide a short series of TED Talks as an overview of the key concepts for each session. These will be shared with delegates two weeks before the conference to provide background information and a resource that will benefit all by showcasing good practice.

Parallel sessions will take place before lunch, six taking place between 11:00 - 12:00 followed by a ten minute change over and then another six sessions taking place between 12:10 - 13:10. Please select your chosen sessions when you register. Please note, spaces are limited for the parallel sessions. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Keynote Speaker

The conference keynote speech will be delivered by Simon Walker from Greenwich University.
Simon Walker is a National Teaching Fellow and Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is the Head of Educational Development at the University of Greenwich, responsible for developing university policy and strategy on learning and teaching excellence, and supporting professional development for academic staff.

Abstract:
Teaching in Higher Education across the world is changing. In the UK, the shift in funding through student fees has produced a variety of institutional responses to deal with heightened students’ expectations and market control mechanisms. Whilst there is general agreement by government and academics that the outcomes of teaching should relate to effective and productive learning, assessment and curriculum design, consensus on how to attain and measure this has been difficult to achieve. This presentation will draw on insights from some initiatives to provide examples of the ways institutions are addressing challenges and opportunities for reshaping teaching and the student experience. It will explore ways of working with academics and students that enhance learning in the post digital era.
