In this class we will be creating structural artworks that combine drawing, painting, collage, sgraffito, and encaustic techniques, all designed to build richly textured layers using simple materials found at home.
Anselm Kiefer’s monumental work has been exhibited all over the world, including the long-touring Finnegans Wake exhibition, first launched at the White Cube in London.
Kiefer also works on a smaller scale, producing drawings and prints. Central to his practice is the act of collecting, both material and immaterial: memories of people, landscapes, and objects. You will see how the gathering of materials and memories can shape a surface into a painting.
Kiefer has long been an advocate for things that have been seen but then suppressed or erased. His works contain many layers, where even the removed layers remain an essential and active part of the artwork. His deep respect for collective and personal histories, and the act of creating them, has become a distinctive and vital element of his paintings.
Suggested Materials
We suggest the materials below but you can join with anything you have. You can always invest / search for new materials after the class and draw along again with the recording access.
- Thick paper or cardboard – do you have anything that has been laying around at home? It may be a perfect surface - try to reuse something :)
- Oil pastels, chalk, charcoal, and other “messy” drawing materials
- Ink
- Paints of various kinds and paintbrushes
- Scissors and glue
- Wax crayons, a candle, and a lighter or matches (for making “encaustic”)
- Toothpicks or other sharp tools for scratching into drawings
- Packing paper (like the kind used for vegetables in shops)
- Various paper you find interesting - it can be old notes or drawings
- Magazines for cutting out images
- Small dishes for water
- Protective paper or covering for your table
This class is suitable for all levels! Practicing artists and complete beginnners a-like.
